Shit, I thought I was a lot farther than 7 miles! Well, at that rate, I'll be home in an hour and a half.

Northern Oregon and the entire State of Washington are absolutely gah gah over coffee. Small kiosks like this
one can be found virtually anywhere you look. Sometimes two of these things will be in the same but opposite ends of the same parking lot. It is good stuff though.

When I was at the coffee kiosk above, I asked about these three very large oars on the other side of the
street. I was told that it was a waste of $190,000.00 dollars. Two customers that drove up had the exact
same thoughts. It is a sculpture. I could have used the money.

The forests out here get clear cut. When that happens, things look pretty bleak. They are replanted the
following year, then allowed to grow. It takes 60 years to reach maturity, but it works.

Here, the trees are beginning to show up, covering the barren groundon the mountain.

I WENT TO SEE THE LARGEST SPRUCE TREE IN THE WORLD. THIS WAS SHOT WHILE WALKING
ALONG THE PATH TO GET TO IT.

IS THIS "GQ" OR WHAT? THAT IS ONE BIG DAMN TREE.

WHEN I STOPPED TO GET MY SAMPLE OF SAND FROM THE WEST COAST, THE BEACH WAS LITTERED WITH THESE
GUYS. THE QUARTER IS FOR SIZE COMPARISON.

      Hi Mark,

Craig and I have been reading your entries faithfully every day and enjoying them so much! What an awesome experience for you. You may be traveling alone, but we're all with you in spirit. Craig has wondered if he could make the same trip. I said sure, but only if I can go, too!
We hope the rest of your journey will be as memorable(and safe)as it has been so far. We know Mary is with you, too, guiding you along your way.
      Godspeed.

      Love,

      Craig and Denise

You sure leave a lot of money on the beaches of America! A quarter here, a nickle there.... You're going to be out of money before you come home! Can't tell you how much we enjoy riding along with you. You are never alone!!

      Hi Mark!

I've been googling you as you travel across the country (yes, "googling" is now a word in the Internet sense). Geez, no matter where you are, you are always exactly as far away from me as you can possibly be! Colorado Springs has never been a "coast" city unless you're talking about coasting down the mountain on a ten-speed bike.

Say . . . you aren't planning to stop in Sturgis on your way back east, are you? I'm checking the 2006 Bike Rally schedule . . . looks like the Burnout Competition starts at 5 PM at the Full Throttle Saloon (I know a couple of dudes who would have won this back in the 9th grade). I'll meet you there.

      Mark,
The shot of you at Realto Beach came out great. My wife (Patty) and I enjoyed talking with you as the sun went down. Hope you have a great remaining ride. Did you make it to The San Juan Islands? Andy
